Quick Mention on Hospital Food in BC, Canada

I was admitted to Hospital on Feb. 1/08. During the first 4 days I was not allowed food as I was on IV. I was so looking forward to some good wholesome food. I would watch the others in my room at meal time and some food was eaten but most was returned to the kitchen. I asked the nurse if there was any way I could have some toast and her reply was " We do not have any budget for supplies anymore." There are kitchens on each floor but no money to keep the fridge stocked for people that need something between meals.

I got talking to the staff and found out that our Premier has outsourced all the cooking of meals for every hospital in BC. My thought to that is: Is he a resident of BC or Ont where all the food is prepared, frozen, flown out and distributed to all hospitals? When needed it is microwaved and served to the patients. The looks of some of it will make you read the menu to find out what it's supposed to be.

Why do we have to have a company in Ont prepare food for all the BC Hospitals? This is taking jobs away from BC. I don't like the way he[Mr. Campbell] presents himself to us and I think that more people need to know how our medical dollars are being spent. I did not know any of this till I was in the hospital and talked to the nurses.

I just hope that a lot of people will read this and then contact their MLA's and let's get our food cooked again in BC, preferably each hospital. The kitchens are there so let's use them for what they were made for.

I wrote this to let others know just how our elected members spend our money, take jobs from our province and give it to another.

I worked at a Veterans Hospital (DeKalb County, GA) where Dietetic Service was reorganized to Food and Nutrition; then experienced cooks became loaders of prepared foods that was shipped to the hospital, packaged very similar to Lean Cuisine. The hospital "outsourced" food preparation, so the stations' cooks became loaders. They simply loaded packages of food into specially designed microwave type ovens. I will occasionally have a "lean cuisine meal" - do not follow instructions via heating in packaged plastic container - place contents on paper, ceramic or glass - set microwave on low and reheat; then eat.

Recently, in the news, toxins from plastic is a debilitating health issue.
